Cristian Cioată

Cristian is a Romanian viol player born on November 7, 1975, near Reghin - a Transylvanian settlement long known as the “City of Violins”. The fame of this place stems from its long tradition of making musical instruments, which makes it a very special place in Romania, both for luthier craftsmen and musicians who come here in search of the perfect sound. With a setting like this, the craftsmanship and sense of beauty that Cristian Cioată demonstrates certainly couldn't have imagined any other way for him to go.

The first violins created by the hands of this luthier appeared in 1998, working with luthiers of the region. After more than a decade of experience, he opened his own workshop in 2009, wanting to create instruments that reflect his vision and artistic sensibility - unique pieces, but brought together by the hand of a single maker. His perfectionist spirit has taken him further, working with an Italian luthier to refine his style and add finesse to his work. Today, every instrument made by Cristian Cioată is handcrafted with care and dedication, inspired by the classic designs of the great masters of universal instrument making

About Me

About violins

The instruments that have come out of Cristian Cioată's workshop have traveled all over Europe and beyond, even overseas to musicians who are very satisfied with the sound, dynamics and of course the beauty of these instruments. Not for everyone the look is important, but for Cristian it matters, because a beautiful instrument will attract you to want to discover it and then gradually realize its capacity.

You will discover an instrument capable of powerful attacks with a full sound in forte , perfect to face an orchestral tutti, but also a sweet sound very easy to obtain in piano nuances, for a dynamic palette as varied as possible. Cristian's instruments are very comfortable and let you befriend them from the very first notes.

Violins workshop

Quality control is the foundation of this luthier; Cristian pays particular attention to the selection of the wood he uses, as this is an extremely important first step in the construction of the instrument.

The same level of attention is shown in terms of the lacquer applied to the surface of the instruments but also in the selection of the strings that are used for each individual instrument. In this regard Cristian consults with musicians, luthiers or directly with customers.

The wood used in the construction of the instruments is resonance spruce and curly spruce, which comes entirely from the Carpathian Mountains, a wood highly prized for its acoustic qualities.

To get the best results, once the wood is carefully selected, it is left to dry naturally over a long period of time to achieve the best results. Not only the wood and the craftsmanship are important, but also the varnish, so in Cristian's workshop we use alcohol-based varnish and natural resins.
